TraceLine works well on photos with clear subjects and defined edges — portraits, objects, architecture, sketches, and illustrations. For small or low-resolution images, running LinePrep first to scale up the source will produce cleaner results.
Yes. Use the Edit / Draw mode to erase unwanted noise, draw missing lines, and make pixel-level adjustments directly in the browser. Zoom in for detailed work and undo mistakes with a single click.
LinePrep prepares your source image for tracing by scaling it up and reducing noise. TraceLine then performs the actual line extraction and lets you edit the result. For best results, use LinePrep first on small or noisy images, then open the output in TraceLine.
TraceLine produces line art from your own images, which you can use freely in your projects. Make sure you own the rights to the source images you upload.
Yes, completely free. No account required, no usage limits, no watermarks.
Source image quality matters most. TraceLine performs best on photographs with strong contrast between the subject and background. Soft, low-contrast images — such as foggy scenes or overexposed photos — may produce faint or uneven lines. If your photo is small, blurry, or noisy, run it through LinePrep first to upscale and sharpen it before importing into TraceLine.
For detailed illustrations and objects, set the Contrast slider higher to capture fine internal lines, then use the Eraser tool to remove unwanted texture in areas you want to keep blank. For portraits, a medium Contrast setting typically preserves facial structure without over-extracting skin detail. The Undo button lets you step back freely, so experiment without hesitation.
TraceLine processes images entirely inside your browser using the HTML Canvas API. Unlike most online image tools that send your files to a remote server, TraceLine never transmits your image data over the network. The moment you close the browser tab, all image data is gone — no server stores your files, no database logs your content, and no third party ever receives your images.
This local-first approach is especially important for professional work. Designers handling client assets, architects working with confidential drawings, and anyone processing sensitive visual content can use TraceLine with complete confidence. Privacy is not a paid tier — it is the fundamental architecture of every tool on Tracelyx.
TraceLine is designed as a preparation step rather than a final output. The PNG you export works as a clean base layer for further work in Procreate, Photoshop, Illustrator, Clip Studio Paint, or any vector tracing application. Illustrators import the line art as a new layer and paint beneath it. Graphic designers use it as the foundation for vectorization. Craft makers scale it in cutting machine software before production.
For the cleanest vectorization results after exporting from TraceLine, use a threshold of around 128 in your tracing tool. If you need a true vector SVG, Inkscape's Trace Bitmap or Adobe Illustrator's Image Trace both work well with TraceLine output. Export at 2× or higher resolution from TraceLine to give your vectorizer finer line data to work with.
